The Hydration Sponge Things

So I'm slightly confused. Do the blue sponge things (with the mesh in between) only hydrate the nest or both allow the ants to drink and hydrate the nest at the same time? If it doesn't allow the ants to drink can I put a test tube of water in the outworld? Thanks! :D

But you can put a test tube, if ants dont like this.
