I use a soil for reptile eggs. It has sticks,Pete moss, and coco fiber.

I usually see wild Meranoplus ants nest in sand and clay but I guess any kind of substrate would work.

the only thing about sand is that it makes the ants dirty

If I recall correctly, I remember reading that ants will rarely tunnel through beach sand(dependent on spieces)

yes, my solonopsis invicta ants only nested in part sand, part soil collected by digging. also, they absolutely hate beach sand, it's just a terrible building material as it is too loose

I won't recommend you putting only sand as the others mentioned but instead you can try regular soil (sterilize it first) and/or a mix of sand (don't use beach sand). You can also use the soil you see wild Meranoplus ants use but sterilize it first.

I only use sand for the foraging arena so they don’t dig
