I opened up my formica subsericea colony's nest entrance the other day and thinking they were ready for food but they blocked it up again! Its almost been two month since the colony founded so don't they need food? Any help is appreciated. :)

Sorry, I ment to say I caught the ant queen about two months ago as of this Wednesday and workers came around late August. Wouldn't they still need food by now? :?:

They are probably getting ready for hibernation. Do place some food in just in case.

Sometimes ants need a bit more time to dare and leave their nest. Especially at the beginning. Maybe place a drop of honey in their nest and a small insect part so they have some food.
Doing some proper research is the best way to start an antcolony.

I put the food outside my ants nest entrance but it fell inside of their nest, I think they might reject it but hopefully they eat it, gain protein and the queen starts laying some more eggs. :)

You could also just put it in and then use cotton to seal it up so they feel less exposed.

My ants are in a vertical ant farm with dirt. How would I do that? Would I just put a piece of of cotton in their nest entrance like you said? :?:
