I disagree. I am thinking more along the lines of Pheidole, but there is only one picture and it is tiny.

What key do you use to identify ants? The AntWiki key for NA shows a very pronounced 'heart' shape from Cremogaster. From what I get the best 100% way to identify Cremogaster is the how the gaster hangs. But i'm also new to this so I may be wrong. What/Whose 'keys' (proper term?) do you use to identify ants here. I've come across AntWiki and AntKey myself.

Pheidole are often pretty small, but so can be Crematogaster.

When there are 46+ kinds of Crematogaster in a given location, I would not dare to identify to the species unless I had physical details to confirm it. I'm pretty certain this is Pheidole, anyways. We would need some intense closeups to to go any farther than that.

It is a Pheidole queen. The length of Pheidole is around 5-6mm while Crematogaster sp are slightly longer in length.
I have already caught 30+ Pheidole queens so far so trust me, and I am from Singapore too.
So far only there are only 9 Crematogaster sp in Singapore.

Re: 5 mm Ant Queen caught in Singapore
Unfortunately this is not true. While I'm sure there are lots of Pheidole queens that are 5-6mm there are a ton of Pheidole queens that are much larger or smaller. Few Examples:zpiter wrote:The length of Pheidole is around 5-6mm
Pheidole rhea 15mm
Pheidole obscurithorax 10mm
Pheidole navigans 3mm
Pheidole vorax 10mm

She looks like a Pheidole to me. The head is the right size, the Mesosoma is the right shape, and her gaster is the proper length. 5mm is the right length for Pheidole too
Ants kept
Nylanderia sp.
Camponotus sp.
Paratrechina Longicornis

You are correct and wrong at the same time. Yes, there are pheidole that are larger or smaller, but in Singapore, the common pheidole are 5-6mm.Mdrogun wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2017 6:57 pmUnfortunately this is not true.
