How damp?

I have a new Messor Barbarus colony, and I have just moved the test tube containing the ants into an outworld. I also have an acrylic sandwich which I am planning to move them into. The sandwich currently contains a mix of sand and clay, but it is dry, and I doubt that they can dig tunnels in such dry sand without them collapsing.
Also, I have heard that Messor Barbarus ants prefer relatively dry soil.
How damp should I make the sand/clay?

Preferably, you should have one end of the formicarium damp and one end relatively dry. This creates a humidity spectrum, where the ants choose what humidity level they like best. It isn't so much humidity level as it is variety.
First year and already enjoying it!
