Is this a male alate? (Image may be a wasp) Omg, I have not seen any queens yet. Sounds like nz is starting early. Where are you? Can I call you tonight after work?

None of my local wild colonies are swarming so I doubt my area is properly nuptial yet.

So happy to see other New Zealanders into ant keeping! We think we may have found a queen today but she’s small. Where is every one looking for queens in Auckland?

Hi guys. Total Noob here. My 12 year old daughter is getting interested in ant keeping ( and so am I :-)) I have heard that the best time to hunt for queens is after summer rain. Is this true? We live in Whangarei. Thanks heaps!

yes that is true. But different species of ants require different requirements, like wind, temperature and humidity.
2 x iridomyrmex sp Queen:15+ workers
2 x iridomyrmex pallidus: 40+ workers
1 x pheidole megacephala:2 queen 300 workers.
1 x opisthopsis Queen: 14 workers

Are the nuptial flights still on? I'm in Canterbury and I'd like any species!
