It got wicked cold this weekend up in the mountains, I found Crematogastor workers huddling for warmth under my garbage can lid.

No luck on Camponotus this weekend, waiting for tomorrow when it gets a little more warm and humid, then I'm going to take a walk around the local wood trail. I found some promising trees and some other ant species so hoping for a colony around here working on nuptial flights.

I've got an old birch tree in my back yard that's on it's last legs. There WAS a Camponotus colony in there at one point, but I've not seen hide nor hair of them this year. One of my 3 Crematogastor colonies I'm waiting for has moved into the base of it. Do those two species compete directly?

It is far too cold for ants to fly in WA. It needs to be steady in the upper 60s to get any sort of reliable flights. From what I am seeing, the next 10 days will not reach that temperature. Hopefully we get higher temperatures in 11 days! haha.

According to my weather app, it's gonna hit the 60's this evening, and the highs should be in the 60's for Wednesday-Friday.

No flights today, but found a ton of nests. Going to keep up each day for hopeful nuptials.

Anyone know if they do multiple nuptials or is it one and done? And do they all nuptial at the same time or is it staggered?

I just caught what I believe to be a camponotus pennsylvanicus a few days ago in California.

I have found at least 20 Camponotus queens in the Calaveras mountains earlier this week.

Just caught three large black Camponotus sp. yesterday on the sidewalk just outside my house. One of them had already dealated herself. Looks like all this week is supposed to be good weather for them in the Kent, WA area.
