Hi

I am looking to keep ants but at the minute the wife doesn’t want them in the house. We are moving soon to a house with a garage. I live in the north east of England so temperatures can get cold in winter. Is it possible to keep ants in a garage? If so, what extra equipment would I need to help them?

Thanks

I have not tried keeping ants in aa garage, but I know that there is equipment that can help heat up your colony. For example, consider using a heating cable. Either way, I would expect species which live in England to be able to cope with the temperature they are in maybe hibernate to wait though the winter. If you are going to buy a queen, check which species are fine with the cold, or use a heating device.

If the temperatures get below 0 Celsius you should look into camponotus if you can find them because they have anti-freeze in their Hemolyph (blood) that might help. Other that that I think that the garage would be the perfect place to keep ants.
