That is actually a really good and practical idea. And the fact u have two makes experimenting so much better
I know they are related to both, but when you back track wasps and ants share a closer ancestor then bees. It's like bees made their split earlier before ants and wasps went their sperate ways and yeah you are spot on, males are sometimes described as wasp like in appearance which back up the historical record for the closer ancestor.

I love being on this forum for these reasons I like when people are willing to do practical experiments that are of course not harmful to the ants. Please let us know own your findings on this light experiment as it could provide the rest of us with some interesting results that could aid all ant keepers new and old.

Alright. You could try to lure the ants out with some sugar or some honey. They will take it. Not sure if you can feed them achorn syrup like the canadian tree juice. The ants will probably find it and get it. If you want to have some action going perhaps take a bit of grass and pock a bit arround the nest. But tell your kids not to do that to much with ants cause they are still living creatures. Like don't harm them cause of Ant Love forever

Perhaps try the honey first. It's much saver for the ants and they get a little something for their show. ;D

Good to know that you found her way off from that nest. It is a good indicator for a fertile queen. About that thing with when well my queen drop her wings. Well. I got arround 10-12 fertile queens. Some still got their wings along with their workers. I don't think that all of them will drop them. Perhaps by accident but I think I got some fashion queens. ;D

As for what I know out of AntsCanada videos is that we don’t need to provide anything but water and clean tubes to Queens until they get their nanite (not sure?, the very first workers) and then you'll need to provide some form of food/nutriments.

yes. That's right. The queen can survive for a long period with no food. And only after she got her first workers (nanitics) they need some honey or something. Basicly whatever they eat.

Could it be a lack of oxygen? Too much air tight?

thats alot of room for her it should be mostly water in the tube this is usely a good amount https://imgur.com/eJM9DI0 maybe even less

do your ants hibernate she maybe going into a hibernate period. She may also have not been mated and bay actually be dieing its hard to say if your worried about the cotten being to much put a little else in and make sure its loose not a loose fit but the cotten has been played with abit so its loosend up and has a lot of breath

I think this is actually something worth to discuss to be honest. I mean I myself try to keep the testtube at a 50-50%. Like half the testtube is filled with water and the rest if for the queen to hydro and thermo regulat. So far my queens seem to like it this way. It also gives me some space to work with. Like I want to offer them food but how when the testtube is packed with workers ready to burst out? I've seen some people doing testtubes packed with workers which looks like they are about to get squeezed to dead by the upcomming brood which looks pretty sad and distrubing to me.

That's basicly my opinion but so far it works perfectly fine for me.
