An ants' strength can be rivaled by few animals compared to relative body size.

I'm a newby to the hobby myself, so I can only compare it to ones I've seen up close. If she has a black thorax, red head, and a brow-reddish backside she might be a Messor Barbarus. If she's wholly black but her backside has some browning rings between the segments she might be a Lasius Niger or Lasius Flavus.

Any more experienced antkeepers are free to correct me here, since I might have it wrong.

It's not Lasius, they don't have the two extra nodes between the thorax and the abdomen.
Other than that i'm pretty much at a loss, not a species i'm familiar with... probably best to wait for batspiderfish to come along and save the day :P
First year of antkeeping, already enjoying it!

Currently founding:

Lasius niger
Lasius umbratus
Lasius flavus

Still hoping to find a Formica queen.

It would be great if we could get a view from above, but with the pictures we have I would say Tetramorium Immigrans.

consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

I would say tetrimorium. My myrmica queen has a smaller thorax and gastor. But fortunately for you she is easy to care for as she is fully claustral and doesnt require feeding and more space than a test tube like my myrmica :D also welcome to the family fellow Canadian!

agreed. Watch AntsCanada's video on this species. Its new scientific name is Tetramorium Immigrans. Also, one tip:
When your colony gets to the point that they need an outworld, the only barriers that work are fluon and dry baby powder. (not mixed with rubbing alcohol.) I used baby powder + rubbing alcohol for a while, but once my colony got curious, they could walk right over it. Dry baby powder is the only thing I have found that works. Dab it on with a *** SPAM ***.
