True, I learned some ant owners feed their queen ants at the beginning to minimize the queen eating her own eggs.

actually feeding queens at the beginning GREATLY raises the chance of her eating her eggs. It is really stressful for them to have the cotton removed, a giant toothpick dripping with honey being shoved in their face, And then left with a floor covered in sticky honey or a giant cricket leg that they simply don't need. Just leave your queens alone to do their thing. They aren't hungry. They are designed to survive on their own and survive best when their environment mimics a natuaral, wild environment.

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

i would think of it like this. What if a giant ripped of your roof when you are just lying in the house and put a pot of chili next to you. Would that stress you out? even if you were hungry it would be just weird.

Your ants should be fine with the outworld, just make sure that the entrance isn't too large for them to defend. Although, I don't expect them to be attacked, it will stress them out.

Thanks for the replies. Thus far my ants haven't tried to eat any of the food provided, there is roughly 10 workers and a large pile of brood. How many workers do you need for them to start needing food?
