Ant Anesthesia Research

Hi all,

This post is for researching how long it takes to ‘knockout’ an ant in the freezer. It is to help people freezing their ants reduce the risk of killing them.

The time till the ant is knocked out in the freezer differs from species to species as the more body mass their is to freeze the longer it takes. Some small ants can be knocked out in 30 seconds, whereas some can go in 2 minutes.

If you have read the other topic where some one was asking about ‘Ant Anesthesia’, you will know why I am doing this.
http://forum.AntsCanada.com/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=5548

If you would like to participate, please just test a queen and worker of a species of ant, and post times (times being the time it takes to knock out the ant.

Example:

Species: xxxxx xxxxxx Queen Time: xx Worker Time: xx

Why would you want to freeze them in the first place? To slow them down enough to get a good picture you could just put them in the fridge for a little while.. :?:
Hibernating: (all)

Parasitic Lasius:2

I'm new to ant keeping so my colonies are all still in test tubes. :?

yes... Please don't encourage the use of the freezer. New ant keepers will see it and decide to stick their ants in the freezer resulting in the death of their colonies.
Proverbs 6:6-8

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Yea I think you have to get the timing just right for it to work. Probably not good for beginners.

I don't see any reason to ever use the freezer, when you have the fridge. It takes more time, but it is considerably safer.
