AntsDK's beginner journal - Lasius niger

This journal is mostly for my own sake. But instead of just writing stuff down for myself, I will do it publicly here.

I got my first queen yesterday, a Lasius niger with 4 workers.

I built a formicarium for them.


This morning saw that they have blocked the entrance with sand.
One of the workers was still working on the project of blocking the entrance, while the rest was attending to the queen.

I don't have a macro lens yet unfortunately, so this is the best picture I have for now.


Today the ants have completely sealed the entrance with sand and moved some of it into the test tube.
There's a few pieces of sand in the sugar water, so I know they have been there.

I checked on the colony yesterday to find that another nanitic has eclosed, for a total of 5 nanitic workers
The queen have also gotten a larger brood.

Just got my new formicarium from China.
I don't count on using it until after hibernation though.

8 workers now! Woo!
