Unidentified ant queen.
Found this queen a couple weeks back and I think it may be camponatis pens. But I can't tell for sure and she was also trying to tear at her cotton blocking the exit of the test tube. She's all black no red markings and also shiny. Will post a picture in a couple hours the ones I have are too big of a size

She is about 1.0 to 1.2 cm in size she wouldn't stay still enough for an exact estimate and she was caught in south eastern wyoming at about 9000ish feet elevation

Re: Unidentified ant queen.
Is it too late in the season for her to be fertile do you think?
Re: Unidentified ant queen.
So I have managed to narrow it down to lasius don't think she's formica but really hoping she's not a lasius umbratus that would mean she's a parasite queen and pretty much useless to me right now so can anyone help me narrow it down? Much appreciation from a new ant keeper

Formica sp. Hard to tell which species without a clear look at the shininess of each gastral segment.

Hmmm formica for sure? Looked up nuptial flights of North America and the only formica flying around the time I found her was formica biiphilica but she doesn't look like that. I can try to provide a better picture later today if that will help.

Proverbs 6:6-8
Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Haha.
Not all Formica fly in July. F. subsericea only just stopped flying here in Maine. I wouldn't put too much faith in the current nuptial flight schedules.
