Hi all,

I caught 3 queens today. 95% Sure they are all the same species. They are all about 8-9mm in length. Colour is slightly off-yellowish - especially the gasters.

Thank you!!

Lots of species are flying in Toronto this week. Not great pictures, but those look like Lasius neoniger. I caught 19 on Tuesday

So far this week I have seen:
  • Lasius claviger
  • Lasius neoniger
  • Solenopsis molesta
  • Lasius cp. murphyi
  • Crematogaster sp.

I agree with L. Neoniger. She will not lay eggs till after hibernation.
Proverbs 6:6-8

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Where were you finding them? If I may ask? They are usually in woody areas?

Actually, they're normally on sidewalks. I often go to open areas that have forests beside them, because I find that a lot of queens mate, then walk onto the sidewalk to break off their wings. This week I've found these queens on my patio, sidewalks & even driveways haha! Try looking between 5 - 9 PM when the afternoon heat is gone, and many colonies will be commencing their nuptial flights.
Good luck!!
