Midwest Sightings Thread
Hello! I'm new to the forums and didn't see a thread around for us midwestern states.
If you live in this region, this is the thread to keep an eye on.
Happy hunting!

Re: Midwest Sightings Thread
I had one for the great lakes region and Kentucky.. But this one seems much better!
I read in literature that the flights for Prenolepis imparis will start in late March and continue into April, at least for Indiana.

Wisconsinite checking in here. Never caught a queen ant but I’ve looked for them before. Hoping to catch one this year. Any idea for what type of soil to use? I’ve already built an ant farm.

Michigan also checkin' in. My supplies are all in place, and ready to go. Now it's just a waiting game with the weather.
Re: Midwest Sightings Thread
The winter ants (Prenolepis imparis) are flying north west of Detroit. I was poking around my front porch, not really looking for ants, and happened to see a small ant hill with alates wandering around preparing for a flight. I knew with the weather forecast for rain the flight probably wouldn't happen, so I started looking around thinking where there's one there's probably more. Almost immediately I spotted a mated queen, then another and in about a half hour I had four queens. Unfortunately I accidentally squished one Since they are polygynous I placed two in one test tube and one in the other. Right now they are safe and sound and won't be disturbed for the few weeks.

Another Wisconsinite here for the fun. I'd really like to meet some other people in my area, and also to know when flight's are.

Checking in from central WI. I'm hoping to start a colony this year. Any tips for queen hunting from someone local-ish would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Hey PlantManMike, I'm from Monroe County in Wisconsin, What county are you from?(so as not to ask for city for privacy reasons)
I keep a few queens and am always looking for more. You won't find many queens flying this time of year, but mid summer and later closer to fall you'll find a lot of them flying. A common species here is Camponotus Pennsylvanicus, or Black Carpenter Ant. They are big ants and grow rather slowly compared to some, making them great beginner species. If you need any more info just ask.
