The are usually eady to start but frequently die durkng year 2. Many people also accidentally overheat the nest

They are indeed great for beginners as they are pretty average in every way... not to slow or fast growing not to big either save for the queen unless you feed them a ton to see the big fat repletes become living larder storage units. A lot of people like to add food coloring to the sugar water they feed them to have very colorful gasters in any color you can imagine... They also prefer cold unlike most ants & go into hibernation in the summer instead of the winter.

Myrmica and Lasius could still be flying, yet their nuptial flights usually happen in September.

As of right now Camponotus, Solenopsis , and Tetramorium are flying I'm not certain if or what local ants could be flying near you these are just the ones I have caught recently andhave seen that fly though this time of year
