I'm starting a colony soon, but i'm only getting the OmniNest vertical and have no intention on expanding it over time, so i was wondering, which ant breed should i pick that won't expand into a huge colony, i want them to be comfy in that nest... Carpenter ants maybe? :idea:

I am no expert but most carpenter ant species are very slow growing so they are perfect for beginners... I have had my queen for about 3 or 4 months now & she only has 3 workers & only 2 or 3 eggs in her pile of brood. I have heard other keepers say that after a whole year they only had between 6-12 workers but after the first year they tend to grow a lot faster.

you can control how big your colony gets by how much protein you feed them. once they get to the size that you like, just cut the protein down a very little bit and continue to feed them that amount of protein.
Proverbs 6:6-8

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
