Temnothorax Hunting

I found a few small colonies of what I think are temnothorax, they nested in dirt. The other day I went hunting in acorns and sticks, but found nothing other than some beetle larvae. I wanted to know if anyone had a method of looking for this species, and what to look for. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
