One way too find out...

I tried normal syrup with some wild Camponotus and they wouldn't go near it.

i tried and they drank it

I tried with some formica and they took it.

Just because they take it doesn't mean it provides the correct nutrition for them. I would stick with honey

Sugar is sugar but honey is one of the few sugar sources that is also packed with a number of other benefits. It's packed with nutrition if you get the unprocessed raw honey. Refined white sugars are not good for anyone though they taste good .

Could run a little experiment, put out both and see which they prefer. Camponotus sp. would most likely feed on maple syrup in the wild. Might be a good idea to give then syrup every once and awhile.

Not maple syrup but maple sap. There is no maple syrup in the wild. We gather a bunch of maple sap and reduce it into a thickened, condensed form i.e. maple syrup. Still, if you used real maple syrup, not the imitation stuff, I imagine it would be similar to honey. Honey, after all, is basically just a reduction of flower nectar, the only difference being that the bees make it instead of us.

Yeah dude. The maple syrup I used was straight from maple trees. I assume some ants in the wild would get some of that. In sap form, at least.
