theaxman9's Queen Ant Log
(July 27, 2022) I was just out walking around the block, test tube in hand, looking for pavement ant queens. Then, something catches my eye. A beautiful golden ant, rushing along the pavement. As I bent down to examine it (me never having seen this species before), I realize it's a queen! I quickly whip out my test tube from my pocket and capture her. After finally returning home, I immediately put her in a test tube setup. I am SUPER excited about this, can't wait to see her lay eggs!

You sure it’s not parasitic? Do you know species? I would like to know more!theaxman9 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 2:24 pm(July 27, 2022) I was just out walking around the block, test tube in hand, looking for pavement ant queens. I have no idea what species it is, I searched "Small orange queen ant with red thorax in Ontario" and nothing matched. S. Carolinensis looked similar, but not an exact match. I'll try to get a good pic of her

I just got some images of her but my computer's being weird and not letting me post because the files are too big

I got the images working, look at this beautiful queen

Her gaster seems shorter than that, but maybe it's because she hasn't laid eggs yet. Your probably right
Re: theaxman9's Queen Ant Log
(July 28, 2022) Still no eggs yet, but she seems to like the setup. She isn't tearing at the cotton, and she isn't running around trying to get out. Likely Lasius Subumbratus, but not certain. I'll update in a week/next time I check on her

If she is parasitic she will need host workers or brood to lay eggs

(July 29, 2022) Knowing she is most likely parasitic, I will give her one more day and then I will release her. I was really hoping to have a queen, but I guess it was a failed attempt
