What are the best and the cheapest tools and gadgets to have, if you need to observe ants really, really close up?

If it's only a small area, you can use something like a USB Microscope.
Can be attached to a PC and you most likely will have some LED light to adjust the brightness off.
Can also be linked to OBS.

Doing some proper research is the best way to start an antcolony.
