Welcome to the forum!

I should note that Rhytidoponera need substrate for their larvae to pupate or they will die, most ants (especially Ponerinae) that spin cocoons need substrate to do that, though there are exceptions such as Camponotus, Formica and most other Formicines. Do note that some Formicines don't have cocooned pupae.

G'day,
I am from Perth, I have been keeping ants for a year already. Currently keeping Iridomyrmex bicknelli and Brachyponera lutea. I use red sand from petbarn as substrate. The tunnel and chamber never collapse. Have been feeding them with mealworms, crickets, fishfood, chook, pork, and beef.
I am really interested in founding R. metallica colony is there any chance that I can get one of the queens?
Cheers.
