Would it be ok to feed a small ant colony peanut butter as a protein source?

I would suggest you to feed a small colony feeder insects has they have more protein. Some species of ants may not be able to eat the peanut butter . Find out which species of ants your keeping and know there dietary preferences for example if your keeping harvester ants then they need seeds ,if your keeping leaf cutter ants then they need leaf clipings. The best source of protein for most ant species are insects

When do I feed the ants feeder insects, or how big does the colony need to be to feed them feeder insects?

Well start off small with something like fruit flies and work your way up, keeping an eye on how much they consume

My pleasure. Peanut butter might work btw, but it depends on the colony.

Peanut butter works but I agree with insects being a better source of protein.

Yes You need to provide basic thing as protein which help them to grow and should be warm place for them
