I have a colony of them and if you just keep them in your room they will slow down a lot, not exactly hibernating but sort of.
My current colonies:
-Miniature Military(formica neogagates)
-Black Hearts(crematogaster cerasi)
In search of new camponotus colony
[Have a look at antmaps.org]

You don't "need" to hibernate your queens because their natural clocks will have them do it anyway. There are health effects to not providing proper hibernation for carpenter ant colony's if I remember a scientific paper I read a few years back.
Since those are most likely long term, normal ant-keepers don't have to worry as just getting a colony to survive five years is hard enough.
