Are unrelated male ants attracted to other queens?

I found my queen ant swarmed with male alates of a different species outside its test tube. I am not sure if they are capable of mating with the queen and if they can even mate with a queen that has already begun egg-laying.
keeping:
all my queens died :(
got a sugar ant colony started :)

I think the males mistaken your queen ant to their own species of queen ant :D  maybe your queen is their species (we would never know)

Are you certain they were another species? Male alates are often much different than their female counter-parts, usually different sizes and sometimes different colors as well.

Also...

Although the queen may copulate with several males during her brief mating period, she never mates again.*
