It's perlite - used as a hydration medium.
Or at least I think it is, seemed the right volume to fill the hydration chamber of the hybrid nest anyway :P

I didn't like it so i ditched it and used cotton instead

I found that my Lasius niger ants preferred the cotton too
when using the perlite they ignored the mesh chambers, but when I switched to cotton within a day or so they had dumped a load of sand in one of the chambers and moved the brood in.
the cotton probably presses up against the mesh better i guess? :P

Probably  actually I use the cotton because I have it readily available due to using it to plug ports or applying fluon. It's something versatile that I can use for multiple functions in ant keeping.

Yeah. I would use cotton except I currently only have cotton balls witch is harder to make lay flat in the hydration basin.

I use cotton balls exclusively. I just shred them really good first.
