Hello AntsCanada! I love the show, and it inspired me to buy a small ant farm. So, I'm hoping I've caught my first queen ant, but I'm not sure. It's beautiful! After catching it, I started looking online to see if I could find a picture of something that resembled it so I could maybe identify it, but no luck there. A picture of what I caught is linked below. It was caught in Tyler, Texas. It's about 11x4 mm.

Unfortunately, this is not an ant this is a Dasymutilla sp., which is a type solitary wasp
An ants' strength can be rivaled by few animals compared to relative body size.

I feared as much. I've seen velvet ants around here before, but they are usually larger and lack yellow. This must be a different species from the velvet ants I'm familiar with. Thanks for the help! It's dry, over 100 degrees outside, and late in the season, so I figured finding a queen might be difficult. I'm not ready to give up yet though!
