Help Identifying Species

Post: # 33812Post Hitch3

Hi,

Caught this queen today along with another identical other.

She is roughly 5 mm, and is small and black.

She was caught at about 9 o'clock in the morning on a 26 (Celsius) degree day, one day after rain.

Image

Was thinking she was a species of Iridomymex, but i'm not sure.

Cheers! :D

Yeah it’s better but we need closer pictures cause it’s hard to tell the species from afar.

Need a Macro camera or lens attachment for us to really be able to tell. However can eliminate a lot, as 5mm is very small for a queen. Definitely not camponotus, formica, lasius (i believe). Hurry up on that picture and we can get more for ya! =). Some identification needs to see the hairs coming off of the ant's face, just to give you an idea what we need to be able to see in the pic.

Ok, these are the best I could do without macro.

I just realized you're from Australia. I'm not good with ants that are not from North America, but I think you may be right with Iridomyrmex.

I actually think she may be Melophorus species 2.

Go to the ants Australia shop and go to queen ants for sale. Scroll down till you see the Melophorus species queen. Compare it to the Iridomyrmex queen. My one looks a lot more like the Melophorus queen than the Iridomyrmex queen.

I have 5 Iridomyrmex Bicknelli queens that all look different to the two new ones under question.
