Hi, I am newbie here, 1st time growing a colony, hope to know the type of ant I found so can know what to expect.
Size: Queen 15mm, worker 5mm
When: 3month old, 1 month old for worker
Where: Malaysia, home
Appearance: Queen appear to be black, worker red.
Behaviour: after 20min, settled down, not moving much, but overnight, start pulling cotton.
Picture(s):
Additionally: by luck, Queen flew in and got caught, start laying eggs after a month, worker started apear 1 month after laying eggs. now, only 5 worker ants.

I think it is Camponotus pennsylvanicus. (A species of carpenter ants)

the more I look at it, the more they look like weaver ants. given my surounding (and trees) are filled with them.
the queen keeps its wings, black, now its the 8th ant and the size is now slightly bigger and looks more like those that bitten me.
will continue to monitor, and will try to post some of their photos later

That is definetly a species of carpenter ants. It cannot be weaver ants because the color and the size. Weaver ants are smaller and their colors range from green to brown. The colony you have here is 100 percent Carpenter ants
Re: Identification assist required
She is Camponotus irritans. Weaver ant queens are way different from them.DrunkSpirit wrote: ↑Sat Dec 30, 2023 10:28 pmI only know onedrivr, sorry...
