Queen Ant Identification

Size: ~10mm
When: 12:11PM, Aug 7, 2022
Where: Crawford Bay, BC (small forest/beach town in the Kootenays) walking along the side of a building near the ground
Appearance: She appears to be all black with thin brown lines of hair on her gaster
Behaviour: I don’t have a test tube. I ordered a formicarium but now I’m reading that it’s maybe not the best option at first. My son had an ant farm and there was left over sand/substrate from it that I put into a small container with air holes. She was pacing at first but then has since calmed down and I’ve seen her cleaning her gaster recently.

Additionally: I can't really get a great photo… when I take the top off the container she get stressed and so I don’t want to bother her. Hopefully these are good enough.

Looks like Camponotus sp. I’m not sure what species she is, but someone else might know. :)
Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?
There are so many fascinating ants right where you live!
I disagree with the keeping/buying of ants that aren't in your area.

Thank you! Hopefully someone can chime in on the species. I also got the size wrong. She's ~20mm

Oh, with the size she is probably C. pennsylvanicus. Hope this helps! ;)

Your welcome! I don't know about your area, but in my area Camponotus pennsylvanicus is the largest species here. They are really fun to keep! :D
