If we lose it, what should we do? Just so I know.

There is ways to introduce workers if she continues eating brood and if she doesn’t lay eggs

Huh, that sounds interesting! I’ll definitely think about that. I know we don’t have to do that now, but could you further explain? How long after they stop laying do you have to do this? Do you need to make sure it is the same time of queen, because I’m not sure I know what type she is?

Also, should I just do it soon instead of waiting until she eats the last one?

Someone did tell me she was a Camponotus herculeanus.

Could you clarify?
I found the queen on June 19, in a rotten lot in a small hole with some eggs and pupae. I live in Virginia. I think she is a carpenter ant but I’m unsure.

She certainly looks like C. Herculeanus

If you she ate pupae, she will lay more eggs. After a month of not laying eggs, take action(if no brood). You can do many things like brood boost, introduce workers(I will not explain unless needed), and even attempt to stimulate egg laying, but not sure the last one would work. The other methods I have used a few times, which have worked out.

I know this sounds far fetched, but is there a POSSIBILITY that the pupa hatched and squeezed out of the tube? I only but the cotton ball in between a quarter to half an inch.

Well, I doubt it, but endless it hatches with a pretty hardened exoskeleton.

I don’t understand the list part. Also, pupae ;)

Oh, sorry! I meant to say I only put the stopper cotton ball 1/2 an inch into the test tube, which makes it pretty loose.

Sorry for the late reply! It took me a while to figure out that by list you probably meant last!

Also, people in my house tend to yell across the house to communicate and make a lot of noise and vibrations (garage door opening, loud door closes, etc). I keep the ant in my room where I frequently walk in and out, often without trying to be quiet. It this a risk for scaring my queen?
