Black Camponotus? Roseau, Minnesota, USA (May 27, 2022)
https://imgur.com/a/xczhwCh (Believe it or not I tried to narrow it down to what seemed useful in my extremely limit experience)
Captured in the city of Roseau, Minnesota, USA during early evening of May 27, 2022 with temperatures in the mid 70's°F. We only captured one but there were many out last evening.
Size: 14.3 mm in length
I used the size of the word Magic on the container she was on as reference for measurements.
My guess is a Carpenters Ant (Camponotus spp.) Using the University of Minnesota site as reference.

This is my family's and my first attempt at starting a colony, so I hope the information I provided was sufficient!
Many thanks in advance for those who even just look!

Camponotus modoc? I am saying modoc and not Pennsylvanicus due to the brown legs. It has been reported in your state but antwiki wants confirmation from entomologist I guess.PyroXIII wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 11:42 amhttps://imgur.com/a/xczhwCh (Believe it or not I tried to narrow it down to what seemed useful in my extremely limit experience)

The size, however, is about 0.57cm off. Absolutely Camponotus.

That is certainly a Camponotus.sp congrats on your find! It’s most likely camponotus Modoc as SolenopsisKeeper had stated however it is not listed for ants in your state and it also looks like Pennsylvanicus which is in the list for ants in your state. A few tips for keeping camponotus! Keep Her in a dark closet, cabinet, or drawer that you don’t open often and check on only once or twice a week as carpenter ant queens are very prone to stress. Also these queens are claustral meaning they need no food during the founding stage good luckPyroXIII wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 11:42 amhttps://imgur.com/a/xczhwCh (Believe it or not I tried to narrow it down to what seemed useful in my extremely limit experience)

Thank you all for your insight and advice! Currently I have the her I an old medication bottle, that I cleaned thoroughly, set up as a small version of a test tube set until I can get the proper size in the mail. It should only be a few days, less than a week for sure.

If she lays eggs you can transfer them via q-tip. Also, make sure she has water! Ants get dehydrated very quicklyPyroXIII wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 5:35 pmThank you all for your insight and advice! She does have a source of water, just not as much as a full length test tube can accommodate.SolenopsisKeeper wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 5:49 pmIf she lays eggs you can transfer them via q-tip.
