About 0.5-1 cm

From Myanmar

Is this as it was claimed- a hell ant? I think both antennas and legs are at wrong place according to mandibles. Also where are compound eyes? What do you guys think?

This is indeed a hell ant and this seems to be a queen. And one interesting thing about these ancient ants, their mandibles open vertically unlike modern ants where their mandibles open horizontally.

Really?! How do you know that it’s queen?

Oh yeah the fact their mandibles did that are so crazy and cool! There’s a recent article about scientists discovered one fossil with hell ant in middle of killing it’s prey… WITH A HORN

It looks like there are wings in the amber so I think it's a queen.

Ah I can see that now. I was just being skeptical because I couldn’t see a gaster. If it’s Queen then her gaster should be obvious right?

In Haidomyrmecinae the queens look almost the same as the workers (it's the same for almost every ancient ant species). The only way to tell them apart is the look for wing scars.

Now us Antkeepers know where Odontomachus came from…. And a lot of ant species that have queens and workers as the same size. :)
