Help Please!
Just caught 2 of the same kind of queen. I just want to know what type of camponotus they are, and they both seem to be very active...pulling at the cotton like crazy.

Are they claustral, and do they need to be separate?

Sorry, I forgot to mention all the details.

there are wing scars on both of them, and they were caught within a few feet from each other while outside gardening

Re: Help Please!
Looks to me like Camponotus modoc! Congrats Yes on being claustral, yes on separation.

Re: Help Please!
Thank you! Im really excited. However, should I be concerned about how aggressively they are pulling at the cotton? They do not seem happy at all to be in test tubes

Re: Help Please!
If they’re in the same tube they’re trying to get out before they kill each other as they will not share a nest with another queen.
Camponotus don’t really seem to like test tube set ups. I believe it is too humid for their liking and the glass too cold. I say this because every time I’ve attached a plastic/silicon/ tube to their glass test tube they often sit in the plastic tube and stay out of the test tube.
Eventually they should settle down and lay eggs. You could feed them an insect and sugar water to give them a nutritional boost. They shouldn’t need it, but maybe they are hungry and that’s why they want out.

Re: Help Please!
Theyre in separate tubes, just extremely angry at the cotton lol. I hope they calm down soon then, Ill try giving each some nutrition if it keeps up today. I really appreciate the advice!
Re: Help Please!
Could also be Camponotus herculeanus. But this doesn't change any of the advice you've received.

Re: Help Please!
C. herculeanus tends to have a little more red on the back end of the thorax, which is why I leaned toward C. modoc
