Caught and lost her a few times as I was trying to get better photos and had forgotten how fast it was. Do queen ants head for light because everytime she flew off, she'd head straight for the LED tube on the ceiling.

I'd say she's about 11 - 12mm long. Black house ant maybe?

Oh no! My worst fear has come true! I was hoping it wouldn't because of the fairly large mesosoma but the pointy gaster seemed to say male. :( :( :(

That also looks like a male to me unfortunately. Queens usually have a rounder and bigger gaster. You'll have better luck next time, no worries!
Keeping the following species:

- Messor Barbarus
- Pheidole Pallidula
- Camponotus Barbaricus
- Lasius Niger
- Lasius Flavus
- Lasius Emarginatus
