Hi folks,
I was walking on a friends property into Tuolumne County California and fell into an old stump that was covered with leaves. Then these large black ants came out all over me and ground. they are between 1/4 in to a half inch being the largest with wings. my friend ended up killing the colony " didn't want them on their property" But I managed to save as many as I could. I am sure I saved at least two queens and several males and a bunch of workers and majors I think..... I think they are carpenter ants but hopefully someone can help. also what they eat and how to take care for them. I just could let them all be killed. ok so the forum isn't allowing me to put a picture.

About what they eat it depends and it's easier to tell after having identificated their species, but usually they need carbohydrates such as honey or sugar water as an energy source (if the queen hasn't any worker yet she may or may not need food and that depends if she's claustral or not), and later, when the workers will hatch, they'll also need proteins to feed the brood and lay new eggs.
