It appears to be a Formica ant.

I think you are right. Do you know if Formica wait until after hibernation to start a colony?

I don't believe they do, but i have 2 Formica queens they laid one egg each then the workers came, I feed them but they haven't laid any more eggs. So if you found it under something she might have all ready laid her egg, but i'm not sure.

Formica do not hibernate with brood.
