My 8YO son has developed an intense interest in ants. We have a test tube setup and some eggs. However, I need help identifying the queen. I appreciate any suggestions you can make. We would like to do as much as possible to make her happy. Thanks

Happy to hear your son is developing an interest in ants. Even happier to see you supporting it.

To help in Identifying this queen, will you post a couple of pics with measurements. A ruler or even a coin placed next the queen would help.

Thank you
Keeper of:

solenopsis invicta x3
camponotus sp.
dorymyrmex sp.

Lasius sp. I presume. However the pictures are quite blurry.

A measurement would definitely help... However i disagree with Lasius. I'm leaning towards Formica sp. (possibly subsericea)
And Lasius niger does not exist in America so it's certainly not that ;)
First year of antkeeping, already enjoying it!

Currently founding:

Lasius niger
Lasius umbratus
Lasius flavus

Still hoping to find a Formica queen.

Lasius americanus. Lasius niger and another unnamed species do exist in North America, but they're never what hobbyists bring in.
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.

Thank you all. You have given me a good start. I'll try to get better photos next to a coin. (I was trying to avoid disturbing her as much as possible though.)
