Super major or late queen?
Hello AC!
Just found this guy yesterday (cold rainy day in Western PA - 9/25). 13-15mm.
A little late for a Camponotus queen, no? I have a colony going from a queen I found in May of this year, same area.
Am I mistaking a super major for a queen??
Thanks,
DE

Definitely a Camponotus Pennsylvanicus queen.
An ants' strength can be rivaled by few animals compared to relative body size.

Thanks. Is it strange that it's walking along a sidewalk in late Sept? I have a mated Camp. Penn. that I caught late spring...

what i have on that, is they can fly from March-September.
but september flights are sparse and low population.

Founding:
3 Solenopsis I/X
5 Tapinoma sessile
1 Nylanderia terricola/vivulda
Colonies:
1 Brachymyrmex patagonicus
1 Pheidole soritis
1 Tapinoma sessile
The difference between a hobby and a scientific pursuit, is detailed notes.

It's rare to find queens of this species so late and they are usually unmated.danglyearrings wrote: ↑Wed Sep 26, 2018 8:16 amThanks. Is it strange that it's walking along a sidewalk in late Sept? I have a mated Camp. Penn. that I caught late spring...

Pretty sure I also just saw a camponotus P queen on a sidewalk in Toledo Ohio, almost picked it up but figured it couldn’t be one this late in the year. Now I’m sad

Re: Super major or late queen?
So way to know if it is a queen or not after you place it into a test tube is if the ant inside tries to find its colony (in which case it is not a queen ant) for several hours but if it makes itself comfortable and starts drinking water that you may or may have not included, it is most likely a queen. However, the best way to actually know is to wait until the ant has workers...

Sorry if I ruin the fun but I feel that this topic is old enough to be locked. Feel free to make a new topic to discuss your questions and findings.
Doing some proper research is the best way to start an antcolony.
