Hello, new to all this but interested to know if there are any Ant keeper community events in Sydney or Melbourne.

Re: Ant keepers in Australia NSW and all other states and territories in Australia
I’m in Melbourne but technically not an Ant keeper as I haven’t found any Queen ants yet (only started looking the last 2 days). I’m tempted to buy some online but that seems like a cop out so I’m holding out for now. Would love to hear suggestions on great places in Melbourne to go Queen collecting.

The iridomyrmex sp are flying at this time of the year [with a lot of other species]. I'm from Darwin, I've had a lot of luck with the iridomyrmex sp. caught 9 of them over the last 2 months.JimmyBanks wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2019 4:47 amI’m in Melbourne but technically not an Ant keeper as I haven’t found any Queen ants yet (only started looking the last 2 days). Formicoidea, just as a question what colonies do you keep?Formicoidea wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 10:45 pm
As it gets warmer we should have more and more nuptials. It's best to look after a rainstorm. Looking on the pavement is pretty effective for finding queens as they are visible when they walk over it.
Good luck, keep us posted!

Got some really good rain in the past day. caught 5 healthy opisthopsis Queens (there were over 20), maybe a trap jaw Queen ant (could be a worker), and a probably infertile small Queen ant.

Gold Coast based here, new to keeping as I recently nabbed a Camponotus claripes queen that made the mistake of crossing my coffee table as I was sorting/sterilizing the test tubes I had just gotten
Silly girl

Yeah that's the plan, i do a daily walk every afternoon after work so now I take 2-4 test tubes with me just in case
I'd like to get more as while my current queen is laying eggs (8-10 thus far) there is no telling how that will go, if I end up with a few tube colonies that are going well I may give them away to local guys looking to get into the hobby
