Hey I was wondering if lunchmeat (turkey, ham, etc) is a reliable source of protein for my ants. My Formica subsericea queen is about to have to first adult worker!

It's better if the colony is an older one because the ants themselves can't chew food. They give it to the larvae, which have the chewing parts. It would take more energy for a smaller colony to do this, so giving them insects is way better cause they can just suck up the guts.

I've tried ham with a small colony before, and they couldn't consume even the tiny piece I gave them before it started rotting.
