Fruits are very good for big colonies but not for small colonies because they don't eat them fast enough so they start to mold. If you have a very dried nest actual sugar works and actual sugar dos not really mold.
My current colonies:
-Miniature Military(formica neogagates)
-Black Hearts(crematogaster cerasi)
In search of new camponotus colony

Small 1/4 in or less cuts of organic apple are great for my first nanitics. No mess unlike honey, and you just swap it out once it starts to dry. I've never had a mold issue. The rest of the apple goes to my feeder insect colonies, or to myself so there is no wasted fruit. Depends on your personal preference in the end
