What is that stuff?

I recently adopted an ant colony. Included with the ants was this test tube of what I thought at first was dark-colored honey. But it's not honey. I have no idea what it is. Meanwhile, I have a C. Penn colony, Zena and her Warrior Princesses, of VERY picky eaters. These girls won't even take live insects! So on a lark, I gave them some of the gunk in the tube. And they LOVE it!! Go figure. Any idea what this stuff might be? It's a dark golden brown syrup, almost like maple, but it's not that. Doesn't smell sweet. I didn't have the guts to try tasting it and don't intend to.
Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditiones habes

Main interest is C. Pennsylvanicus, interested in most native ants to my area.

Or could have been some insect jelly that you buy in pet store. when it dries out a bit it goes very thick and gooy
