I love the look of a wooden formicarium's. I can't find a list of ants that are suitable for this type of formicarium. Anyone know where I can find info on that? I know carpenter ants enjoy wooden homes, but they also chew them up don't they?

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Hm, I doubt camponotus would chew through if the wood isn’t rotted, but I’d give it to a lasius just in case.

Carpenter ants burrow into untreated, moist wood, like fallen branches etc. They don't actually consume the wood, as they lack the enzymn to digest it. A simply sollution might be so cover the wooden formicarium with some acryllic plates?

Yes, using acrylic plates on the inside is a good idea. You may also alternatively use Polycarbonate Plastic or as many people call it, Lexan on the inside as well to protect the wood. To create the formicarium's structure, you may use a wood lathe. A bowl-turning lathe (check: https://woodymanreviews.com/best-wood-lathes-for-turning-bowls/) may be ideal for something as such as it's cheaper than conventional lathes. You can dm me for suggestions tho, I've tackled woodworking projects like this before. Would be more than happy to help if you still need it.

“Eat” bird through wood. No ant actually eats would if I am not mistaken, and Camponotus Floridanus is an example that Will not bore wood.
