I have split the set up now there will be 2 colony's camponotus americanus in one and lasius niger in the other, one nest and one out world each, no ants in setup yet so that's why its dry at the moment. Got a lasius niger queen with one worker right now in test tube all the tubing I got at lows/homedepot for cheap and the cost of the nest from AntsCanada site. The outworld are just cretter keepers from pet store, using sand as a medium under the nest so I can adj the wetness really well thanks for the compliments I worked hard on making the setup
On another note I also have a license from the USDA to transport queen ants across the state lines from Arkansas to Missouri, it took like 3 months to get and a lot of paperwork lol

I am thinking about housing a colony of carpenter ants as well. I've gone a little overboard and designed a paladerium to be a mini biotope and mostly self-sufficient.

Since these type of ants are mad for the honeydew secreted by aphids, I want to plant some Chinese spring roses, which actually bear flowers all year round and aphids love them...
I am not sure whether these types of ants like seeds too, but I am thinking about some poppies as well.
In the refugems I plan to breeds snails, shrimp and water striders, which can all serve as food for the fish as well as the ants.

I'm interested in how your ants like your setup. Eager to find out how they fare.

I plan to build it from scratch, using plexiglass. All though I am pretty confident this setup should be good, I am waiting on feedback from some aquarium designers and an ant specialist. Mind you the colony would need to have gained some numbers before moving in. The setup is 120cm wide, 80 cm deep and 50 - 70 cm high...

Check out my other post (on needing feedback on my design) if you want to know more about the other species I plan to live in there
