My Camponotus pennsylvanicus queen

I caught a Camponotus pennsylvanicus queen! :D She is the largest queen ant I have ever seen in my life. She stills had her wings, yet her gaster looked slightly inflated. Is this a good sign that she's mated, or do unmated queens have inflated gasters as well? I will keep you posted on her progress as I check on her weekly.

If her gaster is inflated thats a sign that she might lay eggs!

Not only that, but she is digging a tunnel into the cotton. I think she is trying to make a founding chamber. I doubt an unmated queen would do that.

The test tube was flooded, yet 11 out of 12 of her eggs survived as I desperately moved her to a new test tube.

Hello congrats on the C. Pen queen they are so massive and regal :D I have noticed something strange when looking at these queens which is it appears to be completely random the number of eggs they lay for instance mine laid well over 10 eggs her first batch and now she has 4 of them in the cocoon stage and 6 in the larvae stage
