At what point do you need to start feeding your ants/queen?

How do you put food into the test tube without the ants escaping when you remove the cotton?

Once your queen gets her first set of workers, wait 2-3 days for their exoskeleton to harden. Then feed them with small amounts of food once a week as they grow.
It can get tricky feeding them when they have lots of workers. If the ants are small and have around 10 workers, don't worry too much. Usually they'd be scared to run away. And if they escape, just scoop them up with cotton and put them back.
Once it is almost impossible to feed them without letting alot of them escape, you should introduce a small outworld and feed them there.
