Queens acting as workers

This hasn't happened to me but I have heard about stories where the queen wanders out the nest to work. Has this happened to anyone else? I saw a fire ant queen that went out to forage with the workers with wings on her back (the workers ripped them off when they found her). Any idea why this happened? Just curious

My Aphaenogster rudis queen has foraged before.
Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?
There are so many fascinating ants right where you live!
I disagree with the keeping/buying of ants that aren't in your area.

How big was the colony? I usually only hear about this in small colonies. Around 5-10 workers is how big they are in most stories.

Yes, and alates will shed their wings to become "worker" queens. Common in Odontomachus and semi-claustral species
