Apparently this is completely incorrect in regards to wild praying mantis. Recently I read somewhere online that the females actually don't do this in the wild, however they do it in captivity since they might think, that there is not going to be enough food for her and her offspring. So what they do they kill the male and eat them.
Sadly I couldn't find the science article talking about this specific fact so please take it with a grain of salt.

What can you learn from this? Well it means that insects, even if they are small, might react differently in captivity and therefor some of the things you learned may or may not apply to the same kind of ant species in the wild.
